Interview with Ayvianna Snow

Can you tell us a little about your latest film projects?

I star in cult director Michael Fausti's much anticipated second feature film, Burnt Flowers- it's a haunting and surreal Horror-Noir and I play a mysterious femme fatale, Alice Kyteller, who approaches Detective Franc Alban (Amber Doig-Thorne) to search for her missing husband. In Punch - a gothic, end-of-the-pier slasher film, which is streaming now, I make a cameo as an ill-fated party guest who becomes an unfortunate victim of the local seaside bogeyman, Mr Punch. I also star as a vampire in Sean Cronin's upcoming new film, Bogieville.

Which character/s have you enjoyed playing most in your films so far, and why?

I enjoyed my role in Yellow playing a sex worker; the film is about the misogyny and abuse faced by women who do sex work. I like being able to use my horror platform to shed light on a serious issue, and I am passionate about women's rights. Yellow screens at Romford Horror this month!

What has been your most challenging role to date?

The role of Anna in Derelict was challenging emotionally because of what the character is going through- she is struggling with drug addiction and being forced into prostitution as a result. Whereas Bogieville was challenging on a physical level; lots of jumping around in heavy prosthetic make-up; I even did my own stunts on set!

What recent (and/or classic) horror movie have you watched that has scared or unnerved you?

I love classic horror performances: Tom Cruise in Interview With The Vampire or Gary Oldman in Dracula.

Which horror film have you watched most and why?

I love to rewatch The Shining; it's such a multi-layered film I get something new from it with each viewing.

What's next for you?

Bogieville and Derelict are both out this summer!

Interview with Federico Zampaglione

Before the UK debut of the chilling and provocative supernatural horror flick "THE WELL" at FrightFest Glasgow 2024, director Federico Zampaglione delves into his journey back to hardcore horror, his collaboration with the legendary Giovanni Lombardo Radice, and stepping out from the shadows cast by the Italian maestros of the genre.

So, Federico, THE WELL has its UK premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival, as part of the popular FrightFest event. Excited, or what?

Frightfest it' s the place where everything has started in 2009 and it's one of the best festivals in the world. I can' t wait to show THE WELL to the UK fans.

What inspired you to make the movie?

Wanting to get back on the horror horse! I deeply love this genre, because it speaks to the human soul, investigates our unknown fears and gets lost in deep darkness whilst clinging to a blade of light. THE WELL pushes at the most extreme emotions, destroying the border between reality and fantasy, good and evil, life and death. You will discover that evil has new depths”. Hopefully, it brings new life into contemporary Italian horror.

Without giving too much away, how would you describe THE WELL?

The Well is a terror puncher. My regular screenwriting partner and I started throwing ideas around – from The Picture of Dorian Gray, Countess Dracula and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - and one concept I kept coming back to was the double level chiller, a sort of ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ type of story. Then I was discussing with my wife (actress Giglia Marra), what the scariest place in the world could be and she came up with a well. Trapped deep underground in a constricting space full of dank water, what could be worse?

The cast is stellar, blending emerging talents like Lauren LaVera and Taylor Zaudtke with icons such as Claudia Gerini and Giovanni Lombardo Radice. Additionally, one of your daughters plays a significant role. Could you walk us through the casting process?

I saw Terrifier 2 and liked it a lot, it was a full-on, no excuses gore-fest and Lauren LaVera was a fantastic anchor. So, I contacted her on social media and told her I was about to make this new horror movie and that she would be great as the main character. She was interested, I sent her the script, two days later she said she loved it. I couldn’t be happier with all the casting choices. It was a great experience. Every single actor was so talented and inspired and a real pleasure to work with.

Sadly, Radice passed away a few weeks after filming THE WELL. How would you describe his legacy?

He was an immense actor and a very unique guy. Despite him being just in a cameo role he gave an incredible strength to a very important moment of the film. When I knew he passed away I felt very sad. It was an honour to share the set with such a legend.

You’re on record as saying you were very determined not to compromise on the horror, suggesting that extreme gore is where the zeitgeist is. Can you explain in more detail?

Just look at Terrifier 2, Scream VI and Evil Dead Rise. No compromises. I wanted . The film is very graphic. Importantly both producers didn’t want me to lighten the horror. They insisted it be gory in the extreme, so it gets really nasty and brutal at times. The master of practical effects, Carlo Diamantini, did a very impressive job. You will feel on your own skin every single moment of pain because that’s where the zeitgeist is.
Are you worried that the film is too extreme for the mainstream genre audience?

It' s definitely extreme but you also have some touching dramatic moments and a little bit of black humour in a couple of scenes as well. Just to make you breathe in that bloodbath .

The Well is set to solidify your reputation as a stand-alone genre filmmaker. Has it been tough coming out from the shadow of other Italian genre filmmakers, such as Argento?

Yes, very tough. We all love and respect the great Masters of Italian horror, but they can easily overshadow you . I learned so much from them and I have a beautiful relationship with a lot of them; but at the same time I' m working on my style ...to get better and better and deliver my own vision of the darkness.

What is your opinion of the current horror trends? Do you have a favourite film of 2023?

This is a very good moment ! I loved " When evil lurks", " Talk to me" , "Speak no evil",

"Barbarians" and many others. It seems that this genre is getting to the next level.

Finally, what’s next?

Who knows ?...

THE WELL is showing at the Glasgow Film Theatre on Sat 9 March, 6.05pm, as part of FrightFest Glasgow 2024. Lauren LaVera and Federico Zampaglone will be attending.

Interview with Jaime Johnesee By David Kempf

When did you first become interested in books?

JJ: I started reading at the age of four, and it was love at first book.

When did you write your first story?

JJ: When I was eight, my teacher had us write stories in the cloth-covered cardboard books. Mine was about a porcine superhero named Superpig.

When did you publish your first novel?

JJ: My first novel, Shifters, was first published in 2015 by Devil Dog Press.

Why do you think horror books and movies remain so popular?

JJ: I think their popularity stands the test of time, because it allows us to experience the adrenaline rush that comes with fear. Yet it packages it in a safe and easy-to-consume format.

Why do you think that people are obsessed with being scared?

JJ: The world is a rough place. I think horror gives people a way to experience the thrill of fear without any attached trauma.

Who inspires you?

JJ: My kids. I learn so much from them. I don't know how I got so lucky to be their mom, but I sure am grateful.

What do you think your best novel is?

JJ: Discovery, the third book in my Samantha Reece Mystery series. I worked my way through writer's block to get it done, and I am really proud of how it came out.

What are some of your favorite horror books?

JJ: Number one for me is The Unabridged Edgar Allan Poe. Then I would have to go with Dean Koontz's Watchers. It held a lot of meaning to me, personally. I also have to give a nod to the Hot Blood anthology series. It holds some of the best names in horror, and some truly amazing stories.

What are some of your favorite horror movies?

JJ: I love creature features! Jaws, Deep Blue Sea, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Night of the Lepus they all tickle my zoologist fancy. I also love the movies Freaks (the original 1932 version), and April Fools Day (the 1986 version).

What are your current projects?

JJ: I am currently working on both the fifth book in my horror mystery series, Samantha Reece Mysteries, and the first book in a new series that's more fantasy-based called The Saga of Land and Sea.

Please in your own words write a paragraph about yourself & your work.

JJ: I am a medically retired zoologist–with lupus–who writes to deal with life's hells and pain. Horror is my preferred genre, but I've written a bit of everything. (You can find my work at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, iTunes, Smashwords, and more.) Before I leave, I just want to ask your readers that they please make sure to leave reviews for their favorite authors/books. It's important to help them be seen in the algorithms these days. Also, thank you for taking the time to interview me, and thanks to all those who took the time to read.

REVIEW: Night Swim (2024 Film) - Starring Wyatt Russell

In his directorial debut, Bryce McGuire plunges audiences into the chilling waters of supernatural horror with "Night Swim," featuring an intriguing premise and a suspenseful atmosphere. While the film successfully generates genuinely eerie moments and boasts commendable performances from its cast, it grapples with the confines of a linear and somewhat predictable plot.

Set in 1992, the narrative unfolds as a young girl's innocent quest to retrieve a toy boat from her family's pool takes a terrifying turn. Fast-forward to the present day, and the Waller family—portrayed convincingly by Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle, and Gavin Warren—finds itself ensnared in a nightmarish web. Forced into early retirement due to a degenerative illness, ex-baseball player Ray Waller relocates with his family to a new home, hopeful that the backyard swimming pool will offer recreation for the kids and therapeutic benefits for himself. However, Ray's optimism crumbles when a sinister secret from the house's history unleashes a malevolent force, thrusting the family into a harrowing abyss of inescapable terror.

The film excels in building suspense and tapping into primal fears associated with water, delivering moments that genuinely send shivers down the spine. Jump scares contribute to the overall tension, and the cast's solid performances make the characters relatable and engaging.

Yet, "Night Swim" ventures into familiar territory with its linear and somewhat predictable plot. While the premise is interesting, it feels stretched for a feature-length film, and the film's adherence to a PG-13 rating limits its exploration of the full horror spectrum. Opportunities for delving deeper into supernatural elements and exploring the psychological toll on the characters remain largely untapped.

The inclusion of horror comedy moments provides a welcome break, injecting levity into the tense narrative. However, there's a lingering desire for the film to push boundaries further in this aspect.

In conclusion, "Night Swim" stands as a decent horror film with a solid foundation and effective scares. However, limitations in plot depth and the constraints of a PG-13 rating hinder it from reaching its full potential. While the premise may not fully support a feature-length runtime, McGuire's debut exhibits promise, delivering a satisfactory horror experience with a generous 6 out of 10 rating. While horror enthusiasts may appreciate the suspenseful moments, the film falls short of leaving a lasting, chilling impression.
