REVIEW: My Animal (2023) - Starring Bobbi Salvör Menuez

"My Animal," directed by Jacqueline Castel, intertwines supernatural horror, romance, and the challenges of teenage life within a small northern town. While the film possesses some strengths, it ultimately falls short due to its execution of the plot, inconsistent acting performances, and a lack of authentic horror elements.

The storyline centers around Heather, an aspiring goalie in a hockey-obsessed town, struggling with her turbulent relationship with her alcoholic mother, Patti. A key element of the narrative is Heather's burgeoning romance with Jonny, a tormented figure skater and newcomer to the town. Their relationship unfolds amidst the backdrop of Heather grappling with her hidden sexual orientation and a familial curse that transforms her into a feral wolf under the full moon.

"My Animal" shines brightest in its portrayal of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in tight-knit communities. The film offers a perceptive exploration of coming out in an intolerant environment, depicting both the struggles and joys of young love. The chemistry between the lead actors, Bobbi Salvör Menuez as Heather and Amandla Stenberg as Jonny, lends depth to their characters and resonates with LGBTQ+ viewers, I'm sure.

However, the film stumbles in its attempt to present a compelling werewolf narrative. The plot feels clumsy, predictable, and uninspiring, lacking the tension and fear typically expected in a horror movie. The quality of acting performances varies, showcasing moments of brilliance but also inconsistencies. The film's overall style and direction help compensate for the weak plot, providing a visually engaging experience.

In summary, "My Animal" offers a distinct amalgamation of themes and styles, delving into the struggles of coming out and navigating teenage love in a harsh, small-town environment. Despite its plot execution and horror element shortcomings, the film's direction and the chemistry between the lead actors make it worth watching, especially for those seeking LGBTQ+ representation in cinema.

I'd rate "My Animal" a fair 5 out of 10. It may not be to my taste, but for individuals within the LGBTQ+ community, this film could provide an enjoyable viewing experience.
